Udine is known for the work of the last great painter of the Venetian school, Giambattista Tiepolo. The artist spent one of the most productive periods of his career in the Friuli capital, where he completed various masterpieces, which can be seen in the Duomo (Cathedral), the Galleria d’Arte Antica located in the castle in the historical centre and most of all in the Palazzo Patriarcale. Here the visitor can admire the extraordinary masterpieces of one of the major 18th century European masters, works of such greatness that Udine has been awarded the title of "Città del Tiepolo".
Udine (Udin in Friulian, Videm in Slovene, Weiden in Old German) is a city with a population of 98,326 inhabitants and the capital of the homonymous province. It is considered the capital of today's Friuli.
Come to Udine to discover Piazza Libertà, described as "the most beautiful Venetian square on dry land", dominated by the Loggia del Lionello, a splendid example of 15th century Venetian gothic architecture, distinguished by its stripes of pink and white stone. Facing, there is the Renaissance Loggia di San Giovanni, with the famous Torre dell'Orologio (clock tower), an almost exact replica of the homonymous tower in Piazza San Marco, Venice, with two "Moors" who ring the bell every hour.
